This is a piece of artwork by the photographer Annie Liebovitz. I found this work intriguing as it is a digitally enhanced twist on a classic told fairytale. I think the way it appears is very effective, this is because from childhood we are led to believe that good overcomes evil and everything becomes perfect in the end. This is shown in this type of photography as everything appears perfect. Another thing a appreciate about this piece is the use of blue and the way it is separated from the dress to the sky, this allows the viewer to acknowledge all of the photo equally.
This is a piece of artwork by the photographer Paolo Roversi. I really like this piece because of the fact that it looks to be like an illusion, the illusion being the woman is just a human but she is actually some sort of mythical creature too or and angel. I think another effective aspect of this piece is the lightness of the skin tone, hair and clothes colour in comparison to the darkness of the shadow figure on the background.
This is a photo by the photographer Richard Avedon. It is a portrait photo of Marilyn Monroe and I find this piece very effective. This is because of all the photos of Marilyn I think this represents the truth in her more than any others at this time. Behind the fame she had a lot of hidden demons and I feel that we get a little glimmer into these things as a viewer through this photo. Two things highlight this for me, firstly her expression, she does not look happy to be there and she also looks as though she is contemplating something as if her mind is somewhere else. Also the tones used, they make us notice the lines in her face as they compliment with the darkness of her dress.
This is a piece of artwork by Steven Klein and I particularly like this piece he has done because of the immense power of storytelling within the piece. This woman is obviously very upset and angry, possibly with a loved one, the open door of the car implies that an argument has just occurred and that she is storming off. The rage is clear to see in her facial expression and the clasping of her hands.
This is a piece of artwork by the photographer Lee Friedlander and was taken in Las Vegas in 2002. I really like this image because of the contrast between outside and inside. I also find the diagonal line sin the piece very effective, these being the line of the car, the road and the traffic lights, they appear to all lead into one. The only thing I would change about this piece would be experimenting with colour as it is a piece that I would love to see how it looks in colour as opposed to black and white.
This is a photo taken by the photographer George Tice. I really appreciate this photo as I really like the composition of the raised roadways and how they can be seen to sort of follow on from each other. The use of the tonal black and white I also find effective. This is because I can imagining what it is like to be there, the use of tone makes it feel very real. I also like the aspect of storytelling within the piece as it includes roads, you also know that people are incorporated into the piece as the people will be on the roads, each with their own story.
This is piece of artwork by Fay Godwin and I was drawn to this piece over all her other photography as this makes me feel the calmest. I really like the effect that is created through the use of dull colour, it is not quite black and white but is very close, however I think that I prefer this tone of colour because of the fact that I think it appears to be more realistic and therefore captures the moment and mood much more.
This is a photo by the photographer Thomas Joshua Cooper. I really like this photo because of the sense of movement in the picture. I also think that the composition in the way that it is taken shows the expanse of the space extremely well and is very effective.
This is a piece of artwork by photographer John Davies and I chose this particular piece to write about for a few reasons. The first reason being that I think that the mixture of the straight and curved lines of the architecture is very effective. I also find the concept of incorporating the newer block of flats building in the photo interesting. This is because of the fact that you do not really see it until you really look which gives the impression that these older buildings are seen to be a lot more established and important.
