Six Illustrators That Appeal To Me

This is an illustration by Beatrix Potter for her children's book, Peter Rabbit. I picked her work as it is very famous and instantly recognisable to most people. I really like her work as she uses watercolours and the way she paints with the materials is so delicate and creates very captivating characters. This is what made the stories so endearing, as you always wanted to know what would happened next.

This is a piece of illustration by Val Biro, designed for a children's book. I chose this illustrator as I really like the way that they capture the character within the drawing. They appear very comical and innocent which reflects what a children's book should be. There is a good use of bold and bright colour in this work too which makes it even more enjoyable.

This is a piece of illustration by Ernest Howard Shepard and is my favourite of all of them. This is probably because I absolutely loved Winnie the Pooh as a child, and still appreciate the stories and illustrations today. The drawings captured my mind greatly, I think looking now this is because of the boldness and brightness of the colours but then these have a bold black outline. This good use of line I feel creates a better describe setting for the story.

This is a piece of illustration by Arthur Rackham and this piece captured my focus a lot. This is because to me I just feel that it appears to be very ahead of its time. It was done in 1904 but in a time were I imagine art to be a place were everything has to be so realistic, this piece appears. I think to me this is the use of the chosen media. He has used watercolours with pen over the top. I find this a really beautiful captivating piece.

These are pieces of illustration by John and Isobel Morton-Sale. Isobel's work is on the left and John's is on the right. I really like their techniques of drawing, they both use watercolours but to create very different atmospheres and settings. Isobel's work is much more fictional and storybook like as even though most of her work is of people they are not very realistic to real life, instead they are very charismatic, in contrast John's figures are a lot more realistic but I feel lack character.
