Drama Queen - Illustration Winter 2009 Issue 22

This is an article about Irina Grabarnik who is a Russian illustrator who now works in the Netherlands. I am very interested in the ways of incorporating art within the theatre therefore this particular article appealed to me greatly. She talks about how pleasantly surprised she was when she discovered this aspect of art within society and also what it takes to create remember able merchandise when designing for a production to capture the viewers attention. It is important not tell the story within the theatre poster but has got to capture attention, she talks about the difference in designing for people on the go as the viewers will be people in buses and cars, in comparison to illustrations in a book were people have more time to acknowledge and observe the drawings. I found this very interesting as I had never thought of that aspect before. It is also important to observe the play and the directors view in which way the play will be to interpreted as this will have an impact on the sets, props, costumes, hair and make up which means that the theatre posters have to correspond to this as well and reflect these aspects. Her way of working to capture the viewers attention seems to me by careful placement, readable typography and bold block colour. I found this article very informative and interesting to read and has enlightened me in an aspect of the art industry that I aspire to work for.
