In this weeks life drawing session we discovered how to do tonal drawing. We attempted this with charcoal at which I was a bit worried as I do not think that I am very good at using this media. However I think that even the first attempts at it did not come out as bad as I thought they would. After the first two drawings which are the top two on the first photo, John King, the teacher told me to try and draw the figure without actually drawing lines. This technique of just using block tones to piece together a drawing instead of using lines, I feel is a very useful technique. We then did some smaller sketches of a male model, this took me a while to get into as I always find it harder to draw men as there are fewer reference points to work from. After lunch we then worked on one larger two hour drawing, to start off we prepared the A1 paper with layers of charcoal so that we were going to start with a grey background, this could then be worked into with two different processes, a rubber to find the lighter areas of the figure, and charcoal to find the shadows in the figure. I found this final piece harder in some ways but also easier in other aspects of drawing. This is because I found the placement of the figure harder as we were not drawing out lines for refernces of where the body should go. However I found the different tonal media used useful. Using a rubber as well as charcoal I felt created a better atmosphere in the drawing.
